Review no spoilers:

Just like the first book I never got hooked. I had to remind myself to keep reading.

There was a lot bickering in this story, a lot of back and forth, a lot of tension. very high highs and then big lows. Lauren Roberts really played with our hearts in this book, it was constantly healing the heartbreak and then back up again.

It was nice to see Pae in a different area out of Ilya, even though the road out there was a treacherous one, she is always beating the odds. She always finds a way to survive.

I enjoyed the last few chapters of this book, It all changes, It turns into a different world and Its nice to have a glimpse of it even if it last only a short while.

SPOILERS STARTING HERE

Paedyn is so incredibly strong!!

This book truly shoes how strong she is, how she constantly kept pushing herself to incredible limits. She is the definition of a survivor, she is making herself more and more strong each day.

I feel so heartbroken seeing her struggle so much with the loss of Adena, her trauma when it comes to seeing blood is so sad. I cant even imagine the pain he carries in her heart knowing she was the one who put her dear friend in that situation.

When Pae becomes a street fighter, even tho its one of the few things she can do without giving herself away, I feel like this is a way to punish herself or to take her anger away by hitting others. Im not going to lie when I tell you that I did see her doing that for the long run. I did hope for her to be able to buy herself a house and eventually find a better job, maybe even dye her hair so she can pass as a normal civilian, but i feel that no matter what she did to change her looks, Kai was going to find her if he walked near her. Just a small distance can give her away to the man that loves her… maybe he would’ve stayed and had a life with her, hidden away and undisturbed by the chaos in Ilya.

When it comes to what really happened between Kai and Pae, it was a bit annoying because the back and forth even though it was fun for the most part, it eventually got very boring. They were about to die several times and even with them showing the other how much they care, they will always go back to fighting, like come on… Just accept what you feel, live in love for as long as you can. He had it in him to let her go and to look for her in the future, but it was too late. He spent this entire book forcing her to her doom and then he just decides to let her go right when they where there… What was he thinking? making her walk all the way they just came from and almost died a couple of times….

How can he tell her he loves her right when there is no other way… that is just so selfish of him. He need to grow up……

On the other hand It was amazing to see Pae and Kai spend so much time together. They for once got a real chance to open up and see each other in the most vulnerable state. Even with all the chaos they went through its truly undeniable that they are truly meant for each other.

Kitt: I hated each Kitt chapter like dude shut up. He was always in the way. His mourning is more of a big tantrum. I feel his character undeveloped everything he had grown in powerless, it just went into becoming a very rough and complex person, i guess that what happened when your toxic father is murdered.

All of his chapters were him deep in his own mind, they all felt stuffy and difficult to see his true intentions.

I do feel like he knew all along that Pae wasn’t as guilty as everyone was making her to be and that him being alone and struggling wasn’t about his dad but about making up his mind when it comes to what to do about her. Maybe him forcer her to marry him is his punishment to her and Kai for letting this all happen. He will always keep her close enough but still never in arms reach to Kai. That is the worse type of torture. He will never let them be together.

Did Kitt ever really love Pae? or was it all a over his jealousy of Kai, seeing that his dad thought Malakai was the better king. Maybe Kitt secretly hates his brother.

my mind goes everywhere when thinking how this man came with the idea of marrying Paedyn instead of killing her.

What is going to happen now? What will Kai do? Kai is definitely stronger than Kitt but he could never kill his own brother, his best friend. What is the meaning behind all of this?

“I may be a monster, but if you cut me, I'll bleed. And if you break my heart, Pae, you'll break me. So, if even a sliver of your soul longs for mine, I'll spend the rest of my life trying to deserve it.”

“You promised to be my undoing,” I murmur, lowering my head close enough to hear her sharp intake of breath. “So, prove it.” Her face angles up toward mine, our noses brushing. She never lowers her dagger, and the point of her blade still draws blood from my throat. “Prove it,” I repeat, voice quiet. “Hate me enough to make me want you.” I cup her jaw, feeling her eyes burning into mine. “Ruin me.” Our mouths crash together.”

“If she is Shadow, then I am Flame. This girl is the very thing I can’t seem to escape—can’t seem to go anywhere without the remnants of her following. Where I am, she is. Whether it’s in the flesh or in the fragments of my mind. And where there is a flame, there is always a shadow. She is my inevitable.”
